Outside my window is a frozen fire bush

28 Dec

I don’t even have to step far outside of my studio for stalactite sources. These icicle formations are around the firebush in the front yard. Pure frozen rhapsody. I have to watch the kids like a hawk around these beauties. They have a thing this winter for knocking down icicles.

Stalactites and Stalagmites form very slowly- Erica and I are going to have to crank ours out in the next 5 months.

Rainbow Lightning’s Guide to the Universe

22 Dec

We are Rainbow Lightning, an artist collaborative from Ohio. Population: 2

We first met in 2008 and have been working and playing ever since. Our collective backgrounds include textiles, metals, ceramics, furniture making, upholstery, installation, painting, drawing performance and video.

We are agents of materials, seeking precise alchemy. We are preservationists of familiarity! We seek a behavioral basis in design aiming to define socially constructed space.

If the perceived environment in a container for the body, social spaces then begin to be just a collection of personal spaces…islands of individuality in a sea of communal living.

We take clues from the social constructs of public space and it’s effect on people to demonstrate the endless permutations and combinations of material, environment, memory and meaning.

The objective goal of our work is to arouse questions of personal identity through the summoning of nostalgia. Our installations become sweeping sermons to memory and loss.

If Rainbow Lightning were a BIG PINK MONSTER this is what its mouth would look like if it were full of cavities. But alas, we are two peach lil humans… and its Mother Natures cavity anyways; Reed Flute Cave in China. Can you believe this place? We need to take a serious field trip. If only Spaces paid for travel and research. This zigzagging sea of stalactites and stalagmites in dazzling colors, this majestic fairyland of caves is pure eye candy for me and Erica while we make our Story, Wish etc installation at Spaces.

The cave is full of stalactites, stalagmites, stone pillars, stone curtains, and stone flowers. We will be trying to do this with all upcycled fabric.

(If you haven’t used your wishbone from Thanksgiving, use it now! Wish us all your best luck.)

Some of the areas in the cave are named: Pines in the Snow, Mushroom Hill, Dragon Pagoda, Sky-Scraping Twin, Virgin Forests, Red Curtain.  One grotto is called The Crystal Palace of the Dragon King!!!!
